And so it begins ………………
1st May 2015 at 3:11 pm #10194beachcomberParticipantElectrics under tray pattern made – thanx Kellogs.
Shotgun lamp mounted and seat to frame mounts finalised.
Wheels finally back and powder coated – yipeeeee. Excellent job for £35 a wheel. New wheel bearings ordered.
Forks stripped ready for bottoms to be powder coated the same Red as the frame.New fork seals arrived yesterday.
real progress at last !!!
2nd May 2015 at 9:42 am #10089KaptainkwakKeymasterIs that a bike I see developing before my eyes? 🙂
Now we are talking . . .
2nd May 2015 at 11:32 am #10195beachcomberParticipantThanx for the encouragement KK,
Yes, it’s good to be able to report some actual progress on the bike. rather than the peripheries.
No real excuses now, oh – except for the having to wait for other peeps to do specialised outwork I can’t do myself !
14th May 2015 at 9:10 am #10196beachcomberParticipantI’d hoped there would be some nice pix of the newly p/coated forks assembled by now – but I live in hope rather than expectation !
I found a new powder coaters – who promised all sorts of wonderous service and good prices AND who could do the work in days rather than weeks …………….. left the fork bottoms there nearly 2 weeks ago, only to get a phone call yesterday to tell me “they couldn’t match the colour” [ to the frame etc ].
Pointless telling them the other parts were done by a company – not a mile away !
Ah well ………. I’ll drop the fork bottoms in to my old p/coaters at the weekend. Again, they are up to their asses in alligators with “proper paying” work, so yet another delay of a week.
One good result – the fork stanchion tops [ in between yokes ] were quite badly pitted, and I naturally assumed that the fork gaiters were hiding more horrors. oh thou cynical one ……. not a bit of it, when I got the forks stripped and lower stanchions exposed, they were fine !
Not only that – but the fork oil had obviously been replaced and there were new seals and evidence of recent work – recent as in before the bike was left to rot outside.
Those who saw the “as bought” pix and laughed like drains and said “you’re building THAT ” – along with myself I might add – like me, would be surprised at all the new and reconditioned parts in and on the bike. The tank has been professionally cleaned and sealed inside, and when I took the valve cover off – the inside was clean as a whistle with new oil and gaskets obvious everywhere. That along with new wheel bearings etc. lead me to suspect that the seller wasn’t telling porkies when he said the guy HE bought it from had told him it had been refurbished. mechanically.
18th May 2015 at 10:59 am #10197beachcomberParticipantWell here we are a week later and STILL waiting for the “new” powder coaters to perform !
On the plus side, my pal AC has cut and bent the alloy under tray – just waiting for my new aircraft snips [ LH,RH and straight £12.95 THE SET- EBay ] to arrive and I can put the final fettling cuts in.
21st May 2015 at 9:10 pm #10198beachcomberParticipantUndertray fettled and part fitted, all threads chased out and stainless fixings sorted.
I’ve also made a start on some of the controls and brake parts etc. All wire brushed and a first coat of textured matt Black applied …….. we’re on the way now !
Now, if only I could find where I put the engine plates for safe keeping !
HAs anyone got some spares just in case ???
21st May 2015 at 10:23 pm #10090KaptainkwakKeymasterLooks like it’s starting to come together now Beachcomber.
I may have some top engine mount brackets but unsure as I have about 30 boxes to check 😆 and I believe they are different for different models. If desperate let me know and I will try and hunt some down.
22nd May 2015 at 7:50 am #10199beachcomberParticipantMany thanx KK.
I HAVE found the top mounts – ooops, I sent them off for powder coating.
It’s the front and rear plates that have decided to go AWOL ! They are in the garage somewhere. Bizzarely, one footrest hanger is also missing – obviously in the same bag.
I remember putting them together in a bag with parts I wanted passivating.
Old age eh !!!!
I also need a good rectifier. The one I have looks a wreck.
I hope to have the engine commercially steam cleaned in the next couple of weeks so I can get it down to the guy who is making the Webber manifold.
29th May 2015 at 8:28 am #10200beachcomberParticipantI have a growing pile of cleaned prepped and painted parts now.
I made a hash of the rear seat closure – what’s that about measure twice , cut once ! The seat / electrics tray mounts have been more successful – all done.
I was amazed that ALL the bleed nipples were solid inside with deposits. I mean solid! I had to drill the crap out. The PO must have had real fun trying to get some brakes. The front caliper is resisting all efforts to get the seized piston out, and I haven’t even got round to the back one yet. I’ll take a look at some spare Brembos [ ex. BMW K100 ] to see if they can be persuaded to fit.
Fork bottoms [ FO Red ]should be ready later today, so forks can start to go back together.
And here it is absolutely monsooning down – and my new Man Cave is dry as a bone !!!!!!!!!!
29th May 2015 at 4:48 pm #10091KaptainkwakKeymasterThe best way to remove seized pistons from calipers is to use a grease gun. Fit a grease nipple to the caliper then the gun and pump in the grease. It gives a much more solid force as grease is much senser than brae fluid and does not compress.
It is guaranteed to move the most stubborn of pistons.
30th May 2015 at 9:38 am #10201beachcomberParticipantThanx for the timely tip KK …. LONG forgotten!
However. I have now intrigued myself with the possibility of the Brembos !
Another aaaggghhhhh moment – collected the fork bottoms / rear springs from the powder coaters – got them home and opened the carefully wrapped parts- only to discover it’s the wrong shade of Red !! They close mid-day Friday, so it’s a lost weekend before I can even take them back for correction !
The Wilwood caliper …….hmmmm, maybe
1st June 2015 at 8:24 am #10202beachcomberParticipantFamily health issues scuppered looking for the Brembos yesterday, but at least I know which boxes they’re in !
The Wilwood could easily work, but I’ve got matching back and front Brembos, so I’ll check them out first.
Undertray is finished and fitted, so I just started laying out some of the components – fuel pump. regulator. STILL need a rectifier peeps.
I’ve got a nice fuse box off one of the Yamaha TR1s, which comes as a self contained unit with a closure to keep everything nice and cosy inside.
I had a quick look at the wiring diagram, and a simple loom for engine management and the stop light / horn doesn’t seem too much out of my comfort zone !
1st June 2015 at 5:23 pm #10203beachcomberParticipantA little further on.
I’m getting the cush drive housing blasted – maybe powder coated.
3rd June 2015 at 8:59 pm #10204beachcomberParticipantSo, fork bottoms off for the THIRD attempt to get the colour right !
While they’re at it I’m getting them to do the cush drive housing as well.
After a determined search [ !! ] in my garage, I eventually found the engine plates – whoooopeee.
Bit of weirdness here – I’m sorting out stainless button head screws for the engine plates to frame attachments. 8mm is like pee holes in the snow, and 10mm just won’t go. I’m not certain if it’s the powder coating that’s doing the trick. Any answers ?
Brembos won’t work – the BMW disc is too narrow.
