    Nice result there.

Your not going to reuse the bearings are you?

I was tempted !!!! But I’d already ordered a complete set of wheel / fork / stem bearings / seals.

I bought new sprockets last year, but I’m in need of a chain – most economical source ?

A question for you guys who WILL know. I will be getting the oil breather [ ? ] housing off shortly for refurb. Is it alloy or steel ?

That will determine polished or Gold passivated finish – ta.

I think the wheel solution is the breakthrough now, I was getting somewhat bogged down and disconsolate before Christmas !

For what they cost I would never reuse bearings these days if I am at that stage especially with the force you needed to get the spindle out.

If you take the bearing reference number (written on the bearing) into any bearing suppliers you will be able to get them at much cheaper prices than bike shops etc charge you, probably with the exception of the headstock taper rollers which are specifically for the auto industry. I paid £2.50 each for my CSR bearings.

The breather housing is alloy now crack on good man we need you ready for the ACE café trip in April !!!

Thanx KK – it’s polishing for the housing then !

Both hubs have now been thoroughly degreased and prepped for powder coating next week – can’t wait.

Thanx for the timely reminder re: bearing alternates.

I did a similar exercise a few years back when I wanted a camshaft bearing conversion [ stock runs in alloy housing ]for my Yam TR1 Cafe Racer.

    Yamaha “specialists” – £15 each – general bearing stockholder – £4.95.

That’s exactly how it goes with these things.

Most bearings, seals, bolts etc aren’t usually made for a bike model. They are standard ‘manufactured in bulk’ items made by another company for use in industry. it is a matter of trying to identify the item and reference it across.

Always glad to help point out if I can.

A bit off beam here – but related………….

When I was researching the bearings for the Yamaha, the old chestnut [ new chestnut? ] of parts made in the Far East / China etc. versus “proper” parts made in Europe came up.

Oh no they’re not !!!! ALL the well known marques [ SKF, FAG, etc ] are now manufactured in plants outside their country of origin ! Most in China / India and one well known North European bearing marque is manufactured in Portugal.

I have all my new bearings now [ KK thanx for the timely reminder ]all ready to be installed.

Not so good news is that the powder coaters have had a huge run for one of their major customers, so wheels still awaiting treatment ……ah well after 12 MONTHS [ !! ] what’s another week or two ?!

I’ve also decided to have the fork leg bottoms powder coated in the same Red as the frame.

My log store [ lean to workshop ] is now nearly finished. That will allow me to actually work uncluttered on sub assemblies / painting / detailing etc.

    I got a couple of 4 ft. x 18″ workbenches courtesy of E-Bay – £50 delivered !

Not the most robust in the world, but by the time I put a couple of ex.kitchen worktops on and beef up the sides – good to go.

So we gonna get progress pictures soon then? Looking forward to seeing your progress.

Think I’m going to have to get another garage/workshop too. What little space I had to work in is now being quickly filled up with a pile of twin spares I’ve just bought and I’ve another potential purchase of spares pending

    You keep collecting KK !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

At least we all know where to get our spares.

Wheels finally going off this coming week – I just have to check Monday morning to make sure they have finished their customer run.

Believe me, I would LOVE to post pix of some nice blingy Gold wire rimmed wheels !

Then I have to pull the forks apart so I can get the bottom legs powder coated Red to match the frame etc.

Anything to watch out for oh wise one ?

Actually the stanchion tops are a bit pitted [ cosmetic ], so maybe I should consider some better looking ones. Alternatively. I could have the top section powder coated [ gaiters on the bottom ].

Thanx to everyone for the encouragement.

Well – big slow down after all the relative progress [ progress report ].

My Dobe’s toe amputation [ really !! ]had complications which has seen me back and forth to the vets – fortunately covered by insurance [ £850 ].

That meant that the lean to workshop stalled out – although the end has now been covered and secured and the roof panels completed courtesy of a pal.

My Daughter and her partner [ been living with us for past year ]are finally moving in to their new house at the end of the week. How’s that been a hold up ? Well, their THREE bicycles are currently stored in my lean to which means I can’t get the benches / etc. set up until they go [ weekend ].

    That’s my excuse anyway………….

Never mind. Enough that you’re still thinking of us. There’s always light at the end of the tunnel, even if the bulb’s gone.

Thanx for that Lonesome …… I’m trying to strike a balance between “being chatty” with progress and abusing the “no new info.” scenario.

    Anyway – progress / non-progress.

After TWO failed attempts at getting a friend of a friend round to do the electrical work in my new “workshop”, I’ve given up and ordered the materials I need and I’ll have a go myself.

However, the benches are now installed [ ‘ish ], but I still need to reinforce them – legs and worktop. I’m not disappointed – for less than £50 I have a good basis for a 12 foot long bench / work surface ! More than enough to get my new [to me ] engineer’s vice, grinder / belt sander, pillar drill [ !!! ] set up with plenty of room for sub-assemblies etc.

As it was [ next door’s shown ] and part finished project.

Oh yes …… and the wheels – hmmmm. My tame powder coaters have been inundated with work and you know what it’s like when folk are “doing you a favour” ! They’re definitely going in end of next week.

Benches now reinforced [ 30 ft long ! ]. New Pillar drill and bench grinder [ thanx Aldi ] will be mounted along with my “new” engineer’s vice [ FOC courtesy of a pal] this weekend.

Electrics now all completed and working [ my own fair hand ] – just the fluorescent light fitting to go up then we’re ready to boogie.

First job is to get the frame and parts down from the garage and checked out – new headstock taper bearings and a few odds [ like under seat electrics tray ]. Then the forks need to be stripped as I’ve decided to have the lowers powder coated in the same FO Red as the frame.

Anyone got some decent fork stanchions? Mine are “borderline” rubbish !

The guy who volunteered to make up the 40DCOE Weber intake is keen – he’s rung me 3 times to ask when I’m taking the engine and flanges round ! Very, very soon now.

Wheels …… ah the wheels. My pal and I are working on another project [ Modern Cafe Racer BMW Oilhead ]and the wheels for that will be Gold powder coated – so we’re taking them all in together – next few weeks.

This is the last non bike pic …. honest !!!!

All ready to go now ……… KZ frame and parts coming down on Monday for the detailing and sub assembly.

I need to make up an electric under tray [ seat ] and fit the Shotgun rear lamp [ stop only ]. Then it’s fit new headstock bearings, strip forks out [ powder coat bottom legs ] and generally try to find all the parts !

I’ll also make a start on the tank and pother parts that need prepping for paint.

I hope to have the engine down to the guy who is welding up the 40DCOE Weber manifold in the next two weeks.

Wheels are finally going off for powder coating with my pal’s stuff next Friday.

    Progress at last ………..
