Hi Phil,
as far as the B-models are concerned, it should be 18 mm.
You may use that axle to remove the flywheel and that needs a 18 x 1.5 mm thread.
So axle should be 18 mm !?!
For sure it is not 17 mm !LTD Twins and some of the early Fours of the Eighties use a 16 mm axle.
