Well after a few months of messing about trying to get it running right I’ve finally cracked it.
Put a leaner needle jet in and it’s cured the richness and bogging at 1/8th throttle. Idle is sweet and it pulls well through all the rev range now.

It’s only took me a year lol.

Awesome! Thanks guys, I guess I’ll give it a try then. I’m not particularly fussed about being able to push the tyres to the limit as I don’t really ride like a tool on my 440. Hell, even if I wanted to I doubt the old girl would be able to do it lol.

Now I know it’s possible I’ve been looking at Avon safety mileage as I really like the vintage look and they go very well with a speed master upfront.

Do you think it will look silly with the 4.00 on the rear or should I really stick with a 3.50. The main reason I wanted a 4.00 up back was to make the back end look a bit beefier.
    Choices, choices.

Thanks for the offer kk but I’m gonna stick with the vintage look for this bike. Probably be a few weeks before I get tyres anyway, gonna do a bit each month til I’ve got everything ready to fit so I’m not off the road too long.

House should be going up for sale in next weeks so, house I’ve been looking at has a garage! So that’s my first priority at the moment. Fingers crossed!

    Thanks again guys 🙂

Saw the bike in the flesh the other day, sounds and looks awesome! Kaptain has done a great job on this bike. Seems so much bigger than my little girly 440 lol. Also it is very comfortable with the high bars on. After hearing and seeing the bike I have no doubt that my next purchase will be a 750 twin!

Sounds like a sticking float/needle valve. Few quid off of eBay. Would be a lot easier to replace that than fit new carbs I reckon 🙂

Hi, the single carb manifold already came with the bike when I bought it however they are fairly easy to make.

A lot of people burn off the rubber on the original carb boots and use those for flanges. It’s important that when you join the mandrel bends to join the two to join together that it’s in the middle and there’s no blobs of weld or anything as I’ve read stories about people starving a cylinder of fuel slightly.

Also it’s a good idea to keep the manifold short as you can end up with fuel pooling, icing and general poor fuel economy.
Ideally, the bands won’t be too tight either as fuel will hit the walls and pool there too.

I’ve also read that some people have used a 90 degree bend where the carb slots on so as the carb sticks out the side of the bIke due to not having enough space at the rear of the engine. This can also lead to starving a cylinder, usually the one nearest the carb as the fuel/air has to do a merry little dance to get to the cylinder.

I went with the vm34, parts are very easy to get, jets are in abundance and they are pretty cheap. I’ve had a few problems here and there with tuning it but that’s mainly down to my lack of experience with carbs. I’m very very close to having it perfect now and it rides great.

One other thing to remember when choosing carb sizes, the bigger the Venturi the more power you will have at the bottom end, sacrificing a bit of top end. And vice versa.

The throttle response on my 440 is similar to a crosser as it’s a big carb. I would be keen to try a vm32 in the future to see what it does to the top end.

Hope this helps in some way

Hi all, sorry for long time to reply.

Bike is running much better now, had a few issues with the idle running away with itself. Turns out the slide isn’t returning by a fraction which is causing the issue. Not really touched the bike the last few months but the recent weather has enabled me to start tinkering again.

Hopefully by Monday I’ll have got the jetting better although it’s running pretty sweet now.

I got the 2-1 manifold with the bike although making one would be relatively simple provided you have a bit of knowledge with welding and patience. They can also be made with PVC or copper piping.

This bike has caused me plenty of headaches but it’s getting there now. Only had it a year lol

Here are a few pics of the single carb i fitted the other day. It runs pretty sweet but is a bit rich. It’s not far off being spot on so I’m happy about that as it ran awful with the standard carbs. It’s a mikuni vm34 if anyone’s interested. 35 pilot and 170 main. Im gonna try the next size down on the main and see how it runs.

If the links don’t work for the pics I apologise in advance!

Yup, I’ll get the beers, it would be the least I can do. If we get this bike going il deffo owe you a drink or seven lol.

Looks like we have some great weather forecast for the next week or so. You know it’s gonna start raining as soon as I get me carbs back!
