  • Kaptainkwak replied to the topic Rearsets anyone? in the forum Technical Garage 5 years ago

I can’t say I know of anyone who has fitted rearsets. However one of our members (chrisLWG) has done a modification to his footrests which alters the position. He has reversed the footpegs (fitting the left on the right and the right on the left) and with modifications reconnected the gear change and brake pedal.

Maybe this would help give you…[Read more]

  • I don’t know that much about wiring LED lights but I do believe they will only work one way meaning they are terminal sensitive. From what you are describing it sounds like the live has a constant connection on the indicator circuit when they are switched on and as the relay attempts to do it’s job it is weakening the positive supply rather than…[Read more]

  • I use to have to work that way so you have my sympathy.

Personally if the sump gasket is currently OK I would leave it alone. It isn’t that difficult to do with the engine in anyway.

Keep us updated with your progress.

  • Kaptainkwak replied to the topic Paint colour in the forum How To Fix It 5 years ago

Personally I am unaware of anything but I would suggest take the right panel to an auto paint suppliers that matches and get them to make you one. Where you have a problem is the base coats as variations can significantly alter the shade. If you want to do it on the cheap take it to halfraud’s or similar and do it that way. Make sure you check it…[Read more]

  • Kaptainkwak replied to the topic Forks. in the forum General 5 years ago

There is a guy on ebay doing fork stanchions for the B1 but at £174 they are not cheap. I have discovered that one of the Z900 tubes fit and if you use the B3/B4 springs they got in without the need of a spacer. They are approximately 30mm longer than standard but still allow (just) the centre stand to do it’s job.

I can get the replacement fork…[Read more]

  • Great that you’ve got it off Jon. I have not had one that stubborn in fact all mine have come straight off. Hopefully it won’t have damaged anything else badly. Shout up if you need any headlight ears etc I have a few reasonable sets here plus other parts.

  • Normally I just use a drift and tap them out a bit at a time. I have not seen that before. It does look like it would probably do the trick. I will speak with Zpower next week and try and get some feedback.

There is a tip for easier removal next time. Using a dremmel or something similar make 4 small grooves in the headstock to allow a bigger…[Read more]

  • Kaptainkwak replied to the topic Tyres in the forum Technical Garage 5 years ago

    Hi Jon

Tyres back in the day were very skinny compared to modern standards but they were designed to do a job and in my opinion did it well. There is not much room to play with at the sides of the wheel so if you are going bigger I would suggest no more than one size up from standard. I personally stick to the original sizes. If it’s not broken…[Read more]

That’s great news about the exhaust but just a bit of a warning with re chroming. Most places don’t want to re chrome exhausts especially used ones as they need to be chemically cleaned to remove the carbon deposits. This takes time and also costs. One member just had his done and I believe it cost around £500 so beware.

  • That sounds like some serious corrosion there. Is it the same on both sides? With a little heat they should turn then lift off. Sounds like the forks will be seriously damaged too. If you need replacements of the forks and headlight ears I can potentially help you out.

It’s always handy to have a pile of bits when restoring one of these twins. Some things do need to be replaced with new parts but there is a great satisfaction when you manage to restore a 40+ year old part so it looks new.

If you are getting rid of any parts please shout up here.

I have spoken to OSpipes. They will do a system at around £800 but they need to have the bike for at least a day while they set it up.
